Erwin 1.4.1 replaces its 3D board when VoiceOver is on

In short

Erwin – A Quantum Puzzle now displays its board as a flat 2D grid while VoiceOver is running. The change is intended to reduce the lag blind players encountered in speech and navigation.

Version 1.4.1 arrived on 20 October. Earlier this year, two blind AppleVis players described Erwin as playable with VoiceOver, but speech lagged throughout the app. One phone also became hot. The problem continued after music, sound effects, and VoiceOver hints were turned off.

The developer says the cause was the 3D rendering rather than audio. With VoiceOver enabled, the new version therefore draws the same board as a simpler 2D grid without the 3D effects. The rules and controls are unchanged. The developer’s own test found faster VoiceOver focus, but the AppleVis thread does not yet have a new report from either player who encountered the bug.

Erwin is a puzzle game about sliding and merging matching tiles across the six faces of a cube. VoiceOver can read every cell’s value, position, and state, read a complete face row by row, and announce the result of a move. It also has turn-based co-op for two to four players, with no timer, where moves and the active player are announced.

One purchase covers iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and the Norwegian App Store lists a price of NOK 59. It requires iOS, iPadOS, or macOS 26 and is not available in Norwegian. Controllers are supported, although menus remain under VoiceOver control while a controller is used.
